WHAT? As the Spanish Socialists Are Mired in Corruption Probes and Sexual Misconduct Allegations, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez Refuses To Resign, Calls the Party ‘Exemplary’

Again, Sánchez refuses to resign.

Maybe the Spanish Socialist party is indeed an example – a bad one.

For the second time in fifteen months, the Spanish Prime Minister, absolutely surrounded by corruption and sexual harassment scandals, took some time to reflect on if he should resign.

The first time, back in April 2024, was prompted by the reporting of compelling evidence linking his wife, Begoña Gómez, to an ongoing corruption probe.

Both times, the socialist leader came back from his ‘meditations’, refusing to resign and call early elections, professing his complete innocence, and vowing to fight corruption and sexual misconduct.

This time, out-of-touch Sánchez went as far as saying his party is ‘exemplary’, even if his wife, brother and former justice minister, as well as multiple socialists party top officials, are all being investigated for corruption, including Santos Cerdán, in pre-trial arrest.

And let us not forget that former socialist party bosses Inigo Errejon and Francisco Salazar have resigned over sexual harassment claims.

Come to think of it, the Spanish government led by Sánchez is indeed ‘an example’, a cautionary tale showing what happens when unchecked socialists are free to run around raping and pillaging.

Again, Sánchez protested his innocence, even if both his wife and his brother are under active corruption investigations.

So yesterday (9), Sánchez went to Parliament to present new ‘anti-corruption measures’ again state that he would not step down from office.

Associated Press reported:

“Speaking in parliament Wednesday at an extraordinary session about a corruption probe involving a former Socialist Party official, the Spanish leader took responsibility for his poor judgement but repeatedly said he would not step down, calling himself ‘an honest politician with ‘the pride of leading an exemplary party’.

‘I will not throw in the towel’, Sánchez said.”

Santos Cerdán was Sánchez’s number two in the Socialist party, and now is in prison pending trial.

On Wednesday, Sánchez presented 15 anti-corruption measures, and at this point in the ‘season of scandals’, you can imagine how ‘well’ it went.

“The move immediately drew ridicule from opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the conservative People’s Party, who urged Sánchez to take responsibility for his party’s actions, report what he knew and call early elections. ‘It’s not that it’s the only decent way out’, Feijóo said, ‘but you have no alternative’.”

It also does not help that Sánchez did a shake up in the Socialist party leadership to try to detach himself from the corruption probes, only to have Francisco Salazar resign under a cloud over sexual harassment allegations.

“The Spanish leader has been in power since 2018 and leads a minority coalition government with leftwing allies. His government has been unable to pass legislation and in recent weeks, its future has looked increasingly uncertain amid the corruption probes.”
