Amid an increasingly polarized political and social climate, Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has made statements that have sparked significant controversy. Omar claimed that the United States is becoming «one of the worst countries in the world,» accusing the federal government of deploying the military on the streets with no respect for constitutional rights. According to her, this militarization reflects the country’s democratic decay and is clear evidence that President Donald Trump is spending millions of dollars to maintain his authoritarian image through a military parade.

Omar, who was born and raised in Somalia under an authoritarian regime, emphasized that even in her home country she had never witnessed such a military presence within a democratic context. For her, the presence of soldiers in American streets represents a betrayal of the country’s founding principles and a direct attack on the Constitution, values, and ideals upon which the United States was built. The congresswoman has called on citizens to take to the streets to collectively reject what she perceives as a militarization of the nation and an abuse of presidential power.

These statements come at a time when the U.S. faces protests and unrest in several cities, sometimes in response to federal law enforcement actions such as immigration raids and confrontations with radical groups. For example, in Los Angeles, thousands of National Guard and military personnel have been mobilized to restore order after clashes and vandalism, generating divided opinions about the use of these forces in civilian contexts.

From a conservative perspective, it is important to note that the mobilization of the National Guard and military forces under civilian command is a legitimate, regulated, and constitutionally authorized tool to maintain security and protect citizens when circumstances demand it. The temporary military presence in certain areas does not mean the establishment of a dictatorship or the end of democracy, but rather the responsible application of state resources to ensure public order and general welfare.

Ilhan Omar’s rhetoric, comparing these actions to an authoritarian regime, is alarming and dangerous. It ignores the system of checks and balances that characterizes American democracy, where military authority is always subordinated to civilian power and the law. By minimizing this reality, Omar not only misinforms but also contributes to social division, fueling a populist narrative that can lead to further polarization and chaos.

It is worth noting that the U.S. Constitution grants the Executive and state authorities the power to deploy the National Guard to protect internal security during extraordinary situations such as riots or threats to public peace. These actions are carried out under civilian oversight with the goal of preserving order and preventing the spread of violence, protecting the rights of all citizens.

Omar’s irresponsible criticism also overlooks the real context: in recent years, many U.S. cities have experienced episodes of vandalism, looting, and attacks on public and private property. In this sense, the intervention of military and security forces is not only justified but necessary to ensure that citizens can exercise their rights without fear of violence or disorder.

Furthermore, accusations of militarization in a country that has faced terrorist attacks, racial unrest, and immigration crises must be analyzed responsibly. Failing to recognize the complexity of the situation and reducing it to a simplistic narrative can jeopardize the country’s stability and trust in its institutions.

From a Republican point of view, President Trump’s leadership has been firm in its commitment to national security and protecting citizens. The measures taken to deploy the National Guard and coordinate federal forces are part of a strategy to preserve order and ensure justice is effectively applied. This not only protects the population but also safeguards the integrity of American democracy.

It is essential to understand that the true threat to democracy does not come from law enforcement or maintaining order but from those, like Omar, who use incendiary rhetoric to undermine confidence in institutions and promote social disorder. Defending the United States requires a collective commitment to law, order, and respect for constitutional principles—values that President Trump has repeatedly emphasized as priorities for his administration.

Ultimately, the United States remains a country with a strong democratic system that guarantees freedom and respect for individual rights. The military and police presence on the streets, when conducted in accordance with the law, is a temporary and necessary measure to address exceptional circumstances and protect the population. This reality should be acknowledged and appreciated, far from biased interpretations that seek to polarize and weaken the country.

The country envisioned by the founding fathers remains strong thanks to respect for its institutions and the will of its people to defend them. In difficult times, unity, responsibility, and strong leadership are essential to ensure that freedom and security continue to be pillars of the nation. More than ever, Americans need a strong and determined government that protects their rights and maintains order—and that is exactly what the Trump administration strives to achieve.
