The fight for the 2028 GOP nomination will begin within the next few years. President Trump has named a couple of people he thinks could ultimately succeed him as the party’s standard-bearer and explained why he’s now completely ruling out seeking an unprecedented third term.
As The Gateway Pundit reported, Trump sat down for a one-on-one interview at Mar-a-Lago with NBC’s “Meet the Press” far-left host Kristen Welker. The interview, taped for Sunday, covered various topics focusing on Trump’s incredibly successful first 100 days in office.
Toward the interview’s close, Welker asked Trump who he sees succeeding him as President.
“I know we are only 100 days in, but as we sit here today, who do you see as your successor, Mr. President?” She inquired.
Trump responded by first mentioning Vice President JD Vance, who is considered the odds-on favorite as the 2028 Republican Presidential nominee.
“It’s far too early to say that, but I do have a vice president and typically would be – and JD’s doing a fantastic job,” Trump replied.
However, Trump declined to endorse Vance as his successor and then named another person rising fast as a MAGA favorite.
“It could very well be. I don’t want to get involved in that,” he said. “I think he’s (Vance) a fantastic, brilliant guy.”
“Marco (Rubio) is great,” Trump added. “There’s a lot of them that are great. I also see tremendous unity.”

Between the two, Trump suggested Vance would ultimately hold an advantage just because of his position in government.
“Certainly, you would say that somebody’s VP, if that person is outstanding, I guess that person would have an advantage,” Trump explained.
Trump also ruled out any suggestion that he could run for an unprecedented third term. As The Gateway Pundit’s Jordan Conradson reported, Trump has occasionally flirted with the idea.
“I will say this. So many people want me to do it. I have never had requests so strong as that. But it’s something that, to the best of my knowledge, you’re not allowed to do,” he explained. “I don’t know if that’s constitutional and if it allows you to do it (seek a third term).”
“But this is not something I’m looking to do. I’ll be an eight-year president. I’ll be a two-term president. I always thought that was very important,” he continued. “This is not something I’m looking to do. I’m looking to have four great years and turn it over to somebody, ideally a great Republican.”
“Four years is plenty of time to do something really spectacular.”
