Mitch McConnell’s political career will officially come to an end next year.
The AP reported a few moments ago on Thursday that the former Senate Majority Leader will seek reelection next year, ending a decades-long career in Congress.
McConnell provided the AP with the following remarks in advance of his retirement announcement.
Seven times, my fellow Kentuckians have sent me to the Senate. Every day in between I’ve been humbled by the trust they’ve placed in me to do their business here.
Representing our commonwealth has been the honor of a lifetime. I will not seek this honor an eighth time.
My current term in the Senate will be my last
McConnell’s upcoming disappearance from the political scene is a welcome development. Over the last several years, he has lashed out at President Trump on several occasions and attempted to end his political career.
This included his trying to keep Trump from getting re-elected and backing Joe Biden on several key pieces of legislation. Moreover, he not only tried to send endless dollars to Ukraine but also included language in a bill last year for automatic impeachment if Trump terminated funding for the war.
His bitterness toward Trump culminated in recent votes opposing impeccably qualified cabinet picks such as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.
McConnell has also experienced multiple health issues in recent years as well. Twice in the last few months, he has experienced nasty falls.
Even more alarmingly, McConnell in 2023 twice experienced health episodes where he froze up during press conferences.
He also had a significant fall at an airport that same year.
