UPDATE: Two Dead After Midair Collision Between Two Planes in Arizona, FAA Confirms

UPDATE (6:32 PM ET): According to an FAA statement, two planes collided midair in Marana, resulting in two confirmed deaths. The Lancair carried two people, as did the Cessna 172.

The FAA released the following statement: “A Lancair collided in midair with a Cessna 172 at Marana Regional Airport in Arizona around 8:25 a.m. local time on Wednesday, February 19. Marana Regional Airport is an uncontrolled field. Two people were on board the Lancair and two people were on board the Cessna 172. The FAA and NTSB will investigate. The NTSB will lead the investigation.”

Marana Airport Superintendent Galen Beem issued the following statement per KGUN 9:

“On behalf of the Town of Marana and the Marana Regional Airport, our hearts go out to all the individuals and families impacted by this event. This is an unprecedented event, and we are grateful for the swift response from the Marana Police Department and Northwest Fire District.”


UPDATE (12:00 PM ET): Marana Police have now confirmed two fatalities in this morning’s plane collision at Marana Regional Airport, according to KGUN 9.


Original report: Two airplanes collided at Marana Regional Airport, northwest of Tucson, Arizona, resulting in the death of at least one person, as confirmed by local authorities.

The Marana Police Department, in a statement posted on social media, described the incident as an “aircraft collision.” They confirmed that both aircraft involved were occupied at the time of the incident.

“The Marana Police Department is currently on-scene at the Marana Regional Airport located at 11700 W. Avra Valley Rd. in reference to an aircraft collision. There has been at least 1 confirmed deceased individual. Details are limited at this time. Media staging will be in the large dirt parking lot outside of the Marana Regional Airport. FAA and NTSB will be responding.”

As of now, the details are still emerging, and the exact cause of the crash remains unclear.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is expected to join local authorities in a thorough examination of the crash site.

KGUN 9 Blake Phillips reported that Marana Regional Airport is an uncontrolled airspace, meaning there is no tower.

This incident comes days after a pilot died and several people were injured when a small business jet crashed into a parked plane upon arriving at Scottsdale Airport in Arizona.
