In September, just days after his first career start for West Point football, Cadet Larry Pickett Jr, a second-year cadet, ran toward a burning car and helped rescue the driver, David Denton, moments before the vehicle was engulfed in flames.
The United States Military Academy shared Pickett’s heroism on social media.
“USMA is proud of the heroic actions taken Saturday night by Cadet Larry Pickett Jr, a second-year West Point cadet and Army West Point Football player, and his father, Larry Pickett Sr, who are seen pulling a driver to safety in a video online taken by the family. Running towards danger to save lives is the embodiment of the Army Values and Warrior Ethos.”

On Thursday night, Fox News held the 7th Annual Patriot Awards, where Pickett received the ‘Heroism Award.’ Following the presentation, he was joined on stage by a special guest, the man he saved.

Denton told Pickett, “Thank you for being there that night. You saved my life. God sent you, you’re an angel, He sent an angel for me.”
He then shared with the audience, “I just wanted to say that that night, God sent an angel down to save me because if it wasn’t for him, I would not be here today.”
“And that lesson taught me a lot….the gift that keeps on giving….he helped me so I’m always going to be, in my life, out there helping other people.”
“I appreciate you. I thank you. Such a selfless [sic} act.”
