U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has submitted an immigration detainer request in Virginia for 35-year-old El Salvadoran Illegal Alien Ricardo Leonel Mejia after he was convicted and sentenced to 30 years in prison for three counts of rape on an 11-year-old girl.
Mejia was sentenced earlier this week after pleading guilty on June 17, 2025, after he admitted to raping the young girl on three separate occasions in 2024. “The first time occurred a few days prior in the bathroom of the home when the victim’s parents were not home, and the second and third times occurred at night when he entered her bedroom,” according to a press release from the City of Virginia Beach.
The victim’s parents had hired Mejia to renovate a bathroom in their home, and the mother found the then-34-year-old “naked in her daughter’s bed.”
Now, he will be turned over to federal authorities and deported.
“Ricardo Leonel Mejia’s crimes are unthinkable. This monstrous individual repeatedly raped an 11-year-old child in her own home,” Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a press release.
“ICE lodged an arrest detainer to ensure that after his prison sentence, he is removed from our country and not able to prey on any more innocent American children. The Biden Administration marked this heinous criminal as a non-enforcement priority—allowing him to roam free and commit these child sex crimes. These are the type of depraved criminals, our brave ICE law enforcement officers are arresting and removing from our country every single day.”
According to the DHS press release, “Under the previous administration, an immigration judge terminated Mejia’s removal proceedings on July 25, 2023, after he was marked as a non-enforcement priority. This allowed him to indefinitely remain in the U.S. illegally. He entered the country illegally at an unknown dat[e] and location.”
The press release further notes that “Mejia had been convicted on four separate occasions for traffic offenses, including driving without a license and driving on a suspended license three times.”
DHS highlighted the illegal alien’s crimes in an X post, giving credit to ICE agents for removing these dangerous predators from our country.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller responded to the post, slamming the Democratic Party, namely Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, and Virginia Gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger for being “singularly committed to the project of keeping all illegal aliens inside our country no matter the cost or the pain.”
