Madison, Alabama, will cease adding fluoride to its public water supply, starting on Monday.

The Madison Utilities Board voted unanimously on March 17 to stop adding the chemical during the city’s water treatment process.

News 19 reports, “The board said the decision was made because of concerns for employees’ health and safety, and because of the way using hydrofluorosilicic acid impacted their treatment facilities. Hydrofluorosilicic acid is used to adjust the amounts of fluoride in water. Madison Utilities said using the acid was causing structural degradation to their facilities, leading to ongoing maintenance costs.”

Madison has been adding fluoride to the water for 34 years.

“Madison Utilities said natural amounts of fluoride will still be in the water supply,” News 19 reports.

United States Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has previously said water fluoridation is “industrial waste” and vowed that the Trump administration would advise all water systems to remove it.

“On January 20, the Trump White House will advise all U.S. water systems to remove fluoride from public water,” Kennedy wrote in a post on X back in November. “Fluoride is an industrial waste associated with arthritis, bone fractures, bone cancer, IQ loss, neurodevelopmental disorders, and thyroid disease.”

Kennedy added that Donald and Melania Trump want to “Make America Healthy Again.”

Utah made history in March by becoming the first state in the nation to ban the addition of fluoride to its public water systems.
