Much was made about the fact that late Pope Francis was the first pontiff to be born in Latin America.
But the Buenos-Aires born Argentinean never got around to visiting his homeland. He did visit no less than 8 Latin American countries: Brazil, Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay, Mexico, Colombia, Chile and Peru – but never Argentina.
But yesterday (7), it arose that newly elected Pope Leo XIV – an American – is about to correct this anomaly: one month into his papacy, he has already announced to visit the ‘Platine Country’.
Reuters reported:
“Argentina’s President Javier Milei held his first official audience with Pope Leo at the Vatican on Saturday where he confirmed that the pontiff will visit the South American country, according to the presidential spokesman.”

No details of the upcoming visit were disclosed yet.
“Milei had a tense relationship with Pope Francis, the late Argentine pope who never returned to his native country during his 12-year papacy, potentially signaling the start of a new diplomatic chapter.
’The Pope confirmed to the President during our recent meeting that he will visit Argentina’, Manuel Adorni, the presidential spokesperson wrote via social media.”
Pope Leo’s visit to Argentina could take place next year, in a trip that would also include Uruguay and Peru, the country where Robert Prevost lived and preached for two decades before being elected to St. Peter’s throne.
President Milei could not attend Leo’s inauguration ceremony due to local legislative elections.
“Discussions between the two parties on Saturday were described as ‘cordial’ and addressed issues of ‘common interest such as socioeconomic progress, the fight against poverty, and the commitment to social cohesion, in addition to addressing ongoing conflicts’, the Vatican later said in a statement.”
