Romania’s political and legal landscape has—yet again, for the upteenth time in the past half year it seems—been thrown into turmoil after the Ploiești Court of Appeal overturned the Constitutional Court’s annulment of the 2024 presidential election’s first round—an election won by NATO critic and independent candidate Calin Georgescu.
On Thursday, April 24, Judge Alexandru Vasile ordered the suspension and annulment of the Constitutional Court’s contentious ruling that had overturned Georgescu’s first-round election victory—a judgment he deemed legally unfound, the Romanian press reported.
Georgescu—a staunch anti-globalist and critic of EU centralization, NATO, and other supranational globalist institutions—had secured 23% of the vote in November 2024, a surprise result that rattled Romania’s political elite.
The annulment—referred to by some as a coup d’état—was based on alleged ‘irregularities’ in Georgescu’s campaign and flimsy intelligence claims of Russian interference. Moscow has categorically denied the accusations, which remain unsubstantiated by concrete evidence.
Now, that annulment hangs in legal limbo. The prosecutor’s office in Ploiești has filed an appeal, with the final decision set to be made by the High Court of Justice and Cassation—Romania’s top judicial authority.
The ruling has set off a political firestorm.
George Simion, leader of the nationalist Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), hailed the decision as a step toward restoring democratic norms: “I support the return to democracy, to the constitutional order and the rule of law: these all mean TURUL2 BACK!” he wrote on Facebook, referring to the second round of elections that never happened.
On X, Simion criticized the Central Electoral Bureau for continuing to block Georgescu’s candidacy despite the ruling, saying it “ignores it and continues its activity.”

Meanwhile, the Party of Young People (POT) President Anamaria Gavrilă applauded the judge’s bravery: “Today a judge had the courage to decide for the truth. Today a judge saved the face of justice in Romanian,” she declared.

But not everyone sees this as a victory for democracy. Former Constitutional Court president Augustin Zegrean slammed the Ploiești ruling as “aberrant” and “legally impossible,” warning that if the decision holds, it could nullify not only the annulment but the entire electoral process initiated afterward.
“A null act gives birth to null acts,” he explained, implying the government’s plans for new elections would also be invalidated.
Even Elena Lasconi, a USR politician and presidential candidate who had advanced to the second round before it was scrapped, voiced skepticism. She argued during a Thursday night interview that the new decision “will increase suspicions, confuse people, and discourage voters.”
Behind the scenes, the legal fight is far from over. Over 100 petitions challenging the Constitutional Court’s annulment have flooded Romania’s appellate courts in recent days, with HotNews reporting a “wave” of filings across the country.

Georgescu, for his part, remains under judicial scrutiny. Indicted in February on six trumped up charges, including plotting “anti-constitutional acts” and promoting “fascist, racist, or xenophobic ideologies,” he has denied wrongdoing, claiming the charges are part of a “deep state” conspiracy to silence him. Under a 60-day travel ban, Georgescu continues to be monitored by authorities.
An investigation into Georgescu’s supposed campaign ‘irregularities’ has since found that the disruptions may have originated from a consulting firm linked to the Brussels-aligned National Liberal Party—ironically, hired to support a rival candidate. The campaign, it seems, backfired.
As Romania teeters between legal uncertainty and political unrest, the future of its presidential race remains caught in the crosshairs of its own judiciary. Whether the nation moves forward—or resets to December 6, 2024—now lies in the hands of its highest court.
