The Romanian Constitutional Court’s unprecedented decision to annul last year’s first-round presidential election—and, months later, to bar frontrunner Călin Georgescu, who had been polling at 45% of the vote—has sparked a political firestorm both at home and abroad, with many denouncing it as a coup d’état.
Now, three of the court’s nine judges are under scrutiny for their connections to powerful globalist networks. Two of the judges have ties to billionaire George Soros, while a third has links to US President Joe Biden.
At the heart of the controversy—the brazenly anti-democratic decision to ban the only candidate critical of US foreign intervention, NATO, and the EU—is Judge Elena Tănăsescu, who sat on the board of the Institute of Public Policy in Bucharest from 2005 to 2019.
The organization has received significant funding from the CEE Fund, a branch of Soros’ vast foundation network.
Critics argue that the institute operates as a foreign influence tool, manipulating public opinion to align with globalist interests. Tănăsescu’s past role as an adviser to President Klaus Iohannis, a key figure in Romania’s corrupt, entrenched political establishment, further raises concerns about impartiality, particularly since the annulled election extended Iohannis’ presidency for several more months.

Interestingly, Tănăsescu was appointed to the Romanian Constitutional Court to serve a nine-year term by none other than President Iohannis himself, as Romanian investigative journalist Iosefina Pascal reported.
Another judge facing scrutiny, Bogdan Licu, has connections to Freedom House, an organization known to receive massive amounts of funding from both USAID and Soros-affiliated groups.

Meanwhile, Livia Stanciu, the third judge in question, was personally praised by then-U.S. Vice President Joe Biden in 2014 for her efforts in Romania’s judicial system. Critics argue that such endorsements helped extend her tenure on the court, further calling into question the true independence of the country’s top judicial body.
Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and his assistant James O’Brien, believed to have pressured Romanian authorities to annul the country’s presidential election results, are being investigated by US intelligence agencies, allegedly at the directives of the Trump administration, a Swiss think tank has reported.
The court’s December 6, 2024, ruling nullified Georgescu’s first-round victory in Romania’s presidential election—an unprecedented move in the country’s post-communist history.
His main opponent, liberal candidate Elena Lasconi, had been set to face him in the final round on December 8 before the decision abruptly halted the process.
With widespread dissatisfaction brewing, many Romanians and foreign observers view the court’s decision as a deliberate and blatantly corrupt attempt to prevent an outsider from challenging the status quo.
Adding to the turmoil, the Social Democratic Party’s Marcel Ciolacu, previously seen as Brussels’ and the globalists’ preferred candidate, was eliminated in the first round by a narrow margin. His defeat in the first round by a narrow margin has only intensified speculation that the court’s unprecedented intervention was intended to tilt the electoral landscape in favor of candidates more closely aligned with the Euro-Atlantic globalist foreign policy establishment’s agenda.
Georgescu’s support surged in the wake of the annulment, with polls suggesting he could win outright in the rescheduled May election.

Georgescu isn’t the only presidential candidate to be banned from running. Romania’s Constitutional Court disqualified another candidate, SOS Romania Leader & MEP Diana Iovanovici-Sosoaca, for allegedly holding positions critical of NATO and the EU—laughably deemed ‘incompatible’ with the country’s ‘democratic values.’
Before being banned by the court, Georgescu vowed to ensure that those responsible for what he calls “high treason” face justice.
“This is no game,” Georgescu said during a televised interview. He also promised to dismantle Soros-linked networks in Romania on his first day in office, likely spooking Romania’s globalist establishment.
With the stakes higher than ever, Romania’s political future remains uncertain. The battle over judicial independence, foreign influence, and the integrity of the electoral process is far from over.
