A suspect accused of setting a man on fire in Times Square has fled to Egypt, according to the New York Police Department.

On March 16, 2025, Mark Whyte, 45, was left in critical but stable condition with severe burns after being lit on fire by an attacker.

The NYPD has identified the suspect as a 23-year-old food cart worker, but his name has not been officially released.

Police say the suspect and Whyte, a club promoter, had got into an argument at approximately 4 a.m.

The suspect allegedly grabbed a gasoline canister from a nearby food cart, covered Whyte with the fuel, and set him on fire.

Whyte reportedly ran about 100 feet while engulfed in flames before a bystander put it out with a fire extinguisher.

The aftermath of the attack was filmed by a witness and posted on social media.

Whyte obtained burns on his face, chest, torso, neck, and back. First responders transported him to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he remains being treated.

It is believed that the two men may have known each other, but a motive for the attack has not been made public.

By the time police named the worker as a suspect, he had already left the United States on a flight to Egypt.

It has not been announced if the U.S. will seek extradition of the suspect at this time.
