Somali-Born Maine State Rep Admits Her Purpose is to Develop Somalia: ‘We Must Always Prioritize Our Country’ (VIDEO)

One Maine state representative has single priority. And it isn’t America.

Deqa Dhalac, a Somali immigrant who was formerly the Mayor of South Portland and is now a member of the Maine House of Representatives, has argued her fellow Somalis should focus on putting their own country first.

“We Somalis living outside of Somalia must always prioritize our country, Somalia, and think of developing our country,” she said in a video obtained by The Maine Wire.

“This must be done, especially by those Somalis abroad, such as in the U.S.”

Dhalac fled the civil war in Somalia over 30 years ago to seek refuge in the United States, although her real loyalty obviously remains with her country of birth.

During the presidential campaign, she argued that a Trump presidency would put the lives of immigrants at risk, including her own.

Her official biography explains:

Rep. Deqa Dhalac is serving her second term in the Maine House representing part of South Portland. She is a member of the Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee.

In 2021, more than 30 years after first coming to the U.S. to flee civil war in Somalia, she became the first Somali-American mayor in the country. She is the co-founder of Cross-Cultural Community Services and formerly worked as the assistant executive director at Gateway Community Services in Portland.

In 2024, Dhalac sponsored legislation that helped establish the Office of New Americans within state government.

Dhalac also serves on the boards of Mercy Hospital and I’m Your Neighbor Books, on the Somali Community Center of Maine advisory committee and the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Population Health.

Since 2008, Dhalac has lived in the West End of South Portland, where she raised her three children, all of whom attended South Portland public schools.

The most high-profile Somali-born politician in the United States is of course Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who has also repeatedly spoken of her loyalty to Somalia over the country that adopted her.

Last year, Omar gave a speech in which she explained how she represents the interests of Somalia and boasted about influencing the U.S. policy agenda towards the African nation.

She later insisted her remarks had been taken out of context.
