DOGE made another noticeable move saving U.S. taxpayers money and perhaps striking a blow against Barack Obama’s massive ego in the process.
As Fox News reported, Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has terminated the lease at the Obama Presidential Library site. This was one of many federal leases and contracts recently terminated.
This library is located at the Hoffman Estates in northwestern Chicago and is not the same as the Obama Presidential Center near Jackson Park on The Windy City’s southside, which is scheduled for completion next year. The Chicago Tribune reports the lease was scheduled to end this year and move to a new location.
Fox News notes the Hoffman Estates site and all presidential libraries are run by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). The Obama Presidential Center, however, is overseen by the Obama Foundation.
DOGE says its decision on the Hoffman Estates property saved almost $1.5 million.
However, some leftist critics speculated that this move was partially about shading the former two-term White House occupant.
“It’s possible (DOGE) has some particular malice toward the real estate holding the archives for the last really popular two-term president,” said Charles Tiefer, a retired University of Baltimore law professor, told the Tribune. “But it’s more likely that it’s fakery about unrealized savings, the same as in hundreds of other contracts.”
There are millions of unclassified documents, which are currently being digitized, and thousands of physical artifacts. The latter includes gifts given to the Obama family, dresses worn by Michelle Obama, and a fancy sword from Saudi Arabia.

According to a National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) estimate, the Hoffman Estate building has approximately 25 million unclassified paper documents. These documents are currently being digitized and will be available in digital format at the Obama Presidential Center when it opens.
Currently at the Hoffman Estates are also 35,000 physical artifacts, including gifts given to the Obamas. The library, a converted former furniture showroom, also houses former President Barack Obama’s silver BlackBerry, the draft of Obama’s first inaugural speech he wrote on a paper pad, a signed Pittsburgh Steelers football, a jeweled sword from Saudi Arabia and dresses worn by former first lady Michelle Obama.
Those artifacts will also be sent to Maryland and occasionally lent to the Obama Presidential Center.
