Populist pro-Trump Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot outside a meeting in May 2024. He barely survived the attempted assassination.

The neoliberal activist and aspiring poet who shot Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was moved by disagreement over funding for the Ukraine War.

Did USAID money lead to the assassination attempt on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico? The patriotic, MAGA-style leader of the Slavic country has asked Elon Musk for information on the funding of Slovak “non-“governmental organizations and media by the US International Development Authority (USAID).

In a letter to the head of the Department for Government Efficiency (DOGE), Robert Fico asked for details of  USAID grants that may have been used for radical political propaganda in his country. Fico has previously charged that Soros media may have contributed to the radicalization and calls for violence that led to his near-assassination 2024.(The name Fico is pronounced “feet so”.)

Dear Friends,
The information that the administration of the new US President is preparing to permanently abolish the USAID agency, designated to deliver foreign aid is extremely serious for the internal affairs of the Slovak Republic. I have therefore contacted Mr @elonmusk, the… pic.twitter.com/tSr0dIBdww

“It is undeniable that funds originating from USAID were also used for political purposes in Slovakia to distort the political system and favor specific political parties,” Fico wrote in a letter shared on X on Tuesday. He urged Elon Musk to disclose which NGOs, media outlets, and individual journalists received US funding.

In order to distinguish useful projects from “gross interference in Slovakia’s internal affairs,” Fico called on Musk to provide specific information about subsidies and grants to NGOs, media and journalists in Slovakia.

“Public sources show that USAID supported these institutions with grants amounting to millions of dollars,” Fico said.

In the letter, Fico also indicated his willingness to meet Musk in person, saying he considers the problem of the “misuse of foreign funds in Slovakia to the detriment of part of the political spectrum” to be so serious that he is ready to discuss it personally. Fico had a phone call with President Donald Trump after his re-election, on Nov. 27.

Fico has previously charged that the 71-year-old left-wing assassin who shot him 4 times and nearly killed him May 15, 2024, had ties to the Open Society-USAID NGO network: “I want to ask the anti-government media, especially those that are co-owned by the financial structure of George Soros, not to go down this road (…). I have no reason to believe this was an attack by a lone madman,” Fico said in a 14-minute video June 6, 2024.

Last week, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced his government would seek full transparency regarding US aid to NGOs and media outlets critical of his administration, emphasizing the need to “eliminate these foreign networks” that interfere in the country’s domestic affairs.

“The continuing revelations by Elon Musk and DOGE about US funding for media and so-called “non”-governmental organizations have unearthed a rats’ nest of international covert operations and influence peddling”, said conservative German publisher Sven von Storch. “It is important that patriots in Europe and the USA team up to investigate  what seems to be one of the biggest political scandals in history.”
